WTF is Affiliate Marketing and why it matters to your Small Business

You’ve probably seen the term “affiliate marketing” buzzing around the internet. All the advertisements of catchy ways to make money in your sleep or creating a passive side income are generally attributed to affiliate marketing. It’s may be trending, but is it important? Let’s answer the big questions: What is affiliate marketing and how does it relate to you and your business?

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing, or AM, is essentially a referral system. It’s built upon the idea of affiliates promoting other people’s products and earning a commission on sales made through that affiliate’s marketing efforts. AM works by revenue sharing, which is the genius behind it. As a mutually beneficial relationship, affiliates are happy to promote products when they’re taking home a slice of the pie.

Sounds great right? Having an army of marketers promoting your products online for a small commission? It is, and that’s why it’s increasing in popularity. It’s a billion dollar industry ($12B worldwide) and it’s even catching up to email marketing. AM usually works through a system of unique links. Affiliates market your product on their websites or blogs via these special, custom links allowing you to track purchases back to them. In addition to these links, AM also works through referral codes. In this case, the affiliate would market a custom referral code (usually tied to their name), for example, ASHLEY20, to be applied at checkout.

You may be wondering, how do you keep track of these sales and attribute it to an affiliate? Well, there’s plenty of software options that make AM easy and affordable. Some popular options include Tapfiliate, Affiliately, and PartnerStack but there are many others.

Is Affiliate Marketing right for my business?

With AM gaining serious momentum, it’s hard to ignore it. However, it’s not right for everyone. AM works with eCommerce and online businesses since payment is completed online. In addition, AM is better for products with a high enough price point to justify the cost. The typical revenue share for affiliate marketing sits around 3-15%. If your product is cheaper, you may need to offer much higher commissions (or higher volumes) to justify the AM’s sales efforts.

If you’re a local or small business and affiliate marketing doesn’t quite fit your needs, “influencer marketing” may be a better outlet for you. You can find local influencers (social media personalities who have established credibility in a niche) and discover many creative ways to work with them in your area.

What does Affiliate Marketing mean for Small Business?

Affiliate marketing is estimated to grow 10x in the next few years so whether it’s right for your brand or not, it’s important to be aware of it. AM is changing the way brands, especially small businesses should approach their audiences. People are looking at other, real people online to tell them what to try and buy. Successful affiliates have serious influence over the internet as followers soak in the very mentions of products.

Whether AM is right for you or not, think about your marketing in a new way. Consider what your audience wants and be sure to deliver content of value. Are your posts educational, entertaining, or controversial enough to start a conversation? Market like an affiliate and most of all: stay true to your brand!

The evolution of Yala & why we changed our name

Since the beginning, Yala has been on a mission to make social media marketing easier and better. We’re pursuing that goal and with you in mind, we’re evolving. So, our name needs to too. We’re no longer, Yalabot. Meet, Yala Social!

Why the name change?

Yala started as a chatbot, hence the name, Yalabot. It scheduled social posts in a smarter and smoother way via Slack and Facebook Messenger and while this initiative was successful, we couldn’t stop there. We listened to our customers and saw what the world needed, so Yala was reborn online. We started adding features to our software, like graphic design abilities and in late 2018, Yala released video ads.

Since Yala has shifted from being a chatbot to a full-suite social media marketing and video ad software, we’re dropping the “bot” and are now “Yala Social.”

What’s happening to Yalabot?

If you’re using Yalabot on Slack or Facebook Messenger, don’t worry. Your favorite social media scheduling chatbot isn’t going anywhere. However, this chatbot is no longer steering our future. All future updates and features will be released on Yala Social, the online app.

We invite all our Yalabot users to please try our online platform. Yala’s online version offers the same, smart scheduling AI plus many other marketing features. Yala Social has already won two awards! We think it’s even better, and we hope you do too.

Battle of the Brands: What’s the best video software for social media ads?

Video marketing is booming in popularity as more and more businesses are beginning to incorporate video ads into their strategy. That’s why when it comes to video ad software, there are endless choices. Yala began as a social media scheduling platform but recently launched video features, allowing you to make simple videos in seconds. Let’s see how it compares to some leaders in the industry at creating social media video ads.

Yala vs Promo

First up is Promo. Starting at $49/month, Promo helps you create videos for your business, but unfortunately, this Basic plan doesn’t get you much. You’re only allowed one video export per month and you need to upgrade to Promo’s $99/month plan to get HD videos and include your logo in your videos. If that doesn’t seal the deal, Yala prioritizes quality customer service for everyone. Promo does too; when you’re paying their Pro price of $359/month.

Yala vs Magisto

Next up is Magisto, an online video editor. For $35/month with an annual subscription, this software comes complete with HD videos, proper customer support, and a library of stock footage via Getty Images. The only downside is that iStock is often overused since so many sites use this same source. Magisto is also designed as a full suite video editor made for lengthy videos. Yala is designed especially for social media videos at the optimized 6-second length.

Yala vs Animoto

Last but not least is Animoto, another online video maker. It allows you to add your own logo and offers HD videos, but they’re from the same source as Magisto. (We told you that library is overused.) Again, Animoto has longer videos in mind, so it comes with pre-built story boards to help design videos. With Yala, you don’t need to imagine a plot. You just need to pick a reaction, add some text, and you’re done.

What do you think?

There are many factors that should be addressed when comparing software, let alone video creation tools. What are your needs? What types of videos are you making? How much time can you dedicate to video creation and how much do you want to pay per month?

Yala is simple. It doesn’t have the robust editing features of other video software because it doesn’t need them. Our goal is to make video ads easier for anyone and any business. Do you want to spend hours editing or do you want to create videos in seconds? Yala is only what you need and nothing you don’t. We don’t want to spend hours on edits, and we don’t expect that you do either. So if easy, short, social media videos are the goal – Yala is for you.

5 Ways to Boost Your Facebook Presence with Video

Did you know that five new Facebook profiles are created every second? With over two billion users, it’s no surprise that Facebook has expanded far beyond photo albums and status updates. The platform is quickly adapting to broadcast video content to compete with Youtube and keep up with the video demand of the internet. It’s no joke since over 500 million hours of video is consumed on Facebook each day. With Facebook setting its sights on video, it’s vital to integrate video content into your marketing strategy.

Here are some creative ways to integrate video into your Facebook presence to expand your reach and gain new followers. Follow these five, easy tips and you’ll optimize your Facebook Business page and boost your brand online!

1. Change your call-to-action button

We all know a few businesses that are hard to explain, but easy to understand after a quick video. Make your favorite video front and center by altering your call-to-action, or CTA, button. Just hover over the CTA button below your cover photo (see in the image below where it says “Sign Up?”), then select “Edit Button.” There are many options you may want to consider, but for video, click “Learn more about your business” then select “Watch Video.” Now when people arrive at your page, it’s clear and easy for them to watch any video of your choosing.

2. Feature a video on your business page

Do you have a cool introductory video to your business or an animated explainer on what a product does? Don’t restrict nice videos to just your website or Youtube channel. Display them on your Facebook too. On the sidebar, click “Videos” then select “Choose Video” in the feature section. Now, your main video will be the main attraction of your video uploads to highlight your best content.

3. Integrate video into your content strategy regularly

Another way to build your video presence is by uploading more videos (no surprise there!). Add video to your content marketing strategy and set a goal to upload one new video per week. You’ll quickly see that videos attract more engagement from your audience. In fact, they typically gain 135% more organic (unpaid) reach meaning more people will see it. The average native Facebook video reaches 16.7% of the total audience! Starting a video strategy is easier than you think. Educate viewers with recipes, quick how-to’s, or share a unique way to use your product. Check out this blog post for starting a video strateg.

4. Try out Facebook Live

If you like Instagram Stories, then you’ll love Facebook Live. The average engagement rate on a Facebook Live stream is 4.3% – that’s huge! Another great reason to try it out is that it’s much more relaxed. It’s a live video so people want to see the real you, unscripted and speaking from the heart. Start off easy with a tour around your business or take them behind the scenes of how you build your product. Next, host a Q&A and even ask the audience to submit some questions!

5. Swap out static image ads for video ads

Enhance your Facebook advertising by switching out static images for short video ads. Facebook has made it easy to promote video ads and they perform better! Try to keep video ads short in length, according to Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, who recommends 6 seconds. Square dimensions also perform better since they take up 78% more space in the News Feed and also yield more clicks than landscape videos. New to video ads? Check out this blog post for an introduction.

Boosting your presence on social media isn’t easy, especially on Facebook. The organic reach of business pages is dropping so it’s essential to adapt your strategy. Since Facebook is changing its platform to better accommodate video, it’s time to learn how videos on Facebook work. It’s also the perfect opportunity to boost your own brand with it. These five, quick marketing tactics are easy to complete and effective. Let us know how it goes!

The 5 Most Common Marketing Mistakes from 2018

Last year was a time of transformation for the world of marketing. Social media changed significantly for business profiles and forced us to market in a new way. In 2018, we learned to play with new algorithms and promote real conversations and engagement across platforms.
Although 2019 has a lot of exciting marketing trends forecasted, let’s reflect on last year before we plan ahead. Here are the top five mistakes that marketers made in 2018. If you’re guilty of one (or more!), we’ll teach you how to leave those mistakes behind.

#1: You didn’t engage with followers

Easily the most common mistake of 2018; marketers did not engage with their audiences. Why is engagement so critical? Engagement (replying, commenting, retweeting, tagging, sharing, etc.) powers many social media algorithms. As Facebook puts it, the more “meaningful conversations” that a post creates, the more people will see the post organically. Often, we saw customers comment or share something and the company remained silent! As a marketer, respond to every outreach and promote conversations yourself. Acknowledge new followers, tag other companies (or people!), and always share like-minded content.

#2: You posted the same thing across all platforms

Sure, it’s easy to create one post then schedule it across all platforms, but not in 2019! Social media platforms’ posting guidelines range from character count to graphic size needs. When you post the same thing cross-platform, you risk cutting your sentences short or your images displaying incorrectly. Unfortunately, this laziness doesn’t go unnoticed. Dedicate the time this year to post unique to each platform depending on its posting needs and your audience’s wants. Different sites have different missions for businesses. LinkedIn is for professional connections and networking, but Facebook is a place to promote conversations and have fun. Think about your favorite brands and analyze how their posts vary for different social sites. Draw inspiration from them!

With Yala, your graphics automatically adjust to fit the platform you’re posting to!

#3: You grew your follower count by following/unfollowing

If number two made us cringe, this mistake makes us cry! Many believe the way to increase your follower count by following and unfollowing many accounts, most commonly on Instagram or Twitter. This might boost your numbers immediately, but you’ll see over time your follower count slowly fades. In the long run, your followers will plateau and you’ll attract “fake” followers – or those that aren’t related to your brand or business. Your goal shouldn’t be to have more followers but rather attracting true, like-minded followers. The best strategy is quality over quantity if you’re expecting to see results and ROI. To gain real followers, follow accounts who are related to your business and interact with them. Leave genuine comments and build relationships. Read their captions and share your input. It takes time, but it’s more effective. We promise!

#4: You ignored video marketing

If there was ever a marketing trend to gain momentum in 2018, it was video marketing. The big mistake, however, was ignoring it! Video content is taking over the internet and it performs better than other types of posts. Implementing video content into your marketing strategy is easier than you think. Here’s a post all about getting your video strategy off the ground! Start with posting short Instagram stories that don’t need editing or film planning. When you’re ready to level-up, try filming an interview or Q&A since answers can be short and sweet. No matter what you’re publishing, make sure you stay true to your voice and brand’s story-telling. That leads us to the last mistake of 2018.

You can now make short, social media text animation videos with Yala! See how it works here.

#5: You didn’t share your story

Marketers often get so caught up in selling a product or service, they forget to tell the story behind it. The “why” behind your business is vital because it transcends your messaging into meaning. Sharing the story or mission behind a brand creates emotional marketing which in turn, creates higher invested customers. This is the reason content marketing became such a phenomenon in recent years. Not only does content marketing allow brands to position themselves as industry leaders by sharing education, but it lets them broadcast a voice, attract an audience of like-mind people, and create a loyal community of followers. When you’re searching for new content to share, try storytelling. Share an interview of your founder and the reasons you created a product. Tell your audience why you started and how you’re making a difference.

Out with the old and in with the new, right? Ditch these five marketing mistakes and embrace a new, healthier marketing strategy in 2019. Stay tuned for more educational social media and video marketing posts. Happy new year, and good luck!

Meet the New Yala 🎥

The makers behind Yala have been hard at work preparing the newest version of our product. The new Yala is making moves, literally. Now, you can create social media video ads! Design custom, animated graphics with your logo in seconds.

Here’s a sneak peek at Yala’s new social media video ad product!

Why social media video ads?

There are a lot of reasons Yala wanted to provide video ads. Most importantly, video marketing is the future. Video content performs better (135% better), and short video ads are the optimum length for social media (just take it from Sheryl Sanberg).

Video was a natural evolution for Yala since we already offer social-media-sized graphics for cross-platform posting. Yala’s AI and scheduling software determines the perfect times to post, so why wouldn’t we want to deliver better content too?

How does it work?

We’re on a mission to make social media marketing easier for everyone. So how exactly does it work?

  1. Simply upload your logo
  2. Add some text
  3. Choose from a variety of themes (even holiday!)
  4. “Animate” and watch Yala work its magic
  5. Download your masterpiece as a GIF or MP4

It’s that easy – seriously. We’ll keep you updated as we expand our video features and venture beyond just text animations. Get ready, because there’s a lot more in the Yala pipeline!

The hunt is on…

This is the third time Yala has successfully launched on Product Hunt and we’re more excited than ever.

Support Yala on Product Hunt

Our team listened to customer feedback and worked diligently to deliver Yala Video. The addition of video ads and animations has brought Yala full circle. It completes our offering by combining all aspects of social media marketing: scheduling, posting, analytics, graphic design, branding, cross-platform promotion, and now video marketing! Now, our customers can enjoy a full suite of products that make social media easier and smarter.

But this is only the beginning…

How do Facebook videos work?

Scrolling through your Facebook timeline, you may notice the majority of your feed is video content. You’ll laugh at a funny video of a cat, then cry to an inspirational video of a blind marathon runner. A few more scrolls and you see a commercial from that clothing brand you were checking out on Instagram (maybe you should buy that shirt..). Where did all of this video content come from? Why is it more popular than photos or status updates? Whether you’re running a business, work as a marketer, or just curious about social media, it’s important to know WHY video is taking over Facebook. So let’s figure it out. How exactly do Facebook videos work?

Why does Facebook love video?

Regardless of whether the video teaches you how to cook 20-minute Chinese food or how someone taught an otter to use an inhaler, videos make us feel emotions and fast. They make us click, share, and comment which is exactly why Facebook loves them. Facebook favors engagement so any post that triggers reactions skyrockets to the tops of our timelines. Hello, viral videos!

This platform also loves video because it performs better (here are three reasons why). If you’re not convinced, just check out the statistics below.

  • Video gets 135% more reach than photos. (Source)
  • 85% of Facebook video is watched with the sound off. (Source) Tip: Include subtitles in your videos!
  • People only watch about 1/3 of a video on average. (Source)
  • The average time watched was about 10 seconds, that’s less than 4% of the average video! (Source) Tip: Start with short videos!
  • 47% of Facebook pages don’t upload videos. (Source) Tip: Start producing video and you’ll be ahead of the competition!

How videos go viral

Since we love video, Facebook has changed its algorithm (the behind-the-scenes rules that decide what does and doesn’t show on your timeline) to favor it too. This ranking system wants to bring people “closer together,” as Facebook puts it. Watch THIS video to understand what they mean. The videos that go viral are the ones attracting the most engagements and keep viewers hooked.

The most important video factor to this algorithm: percent completion. Facebook identifies a video that’s at least half consumed as “compelling” and therefore prioritizes it. If a video doesn’t keep eyeballs glued to the screen, it’ll lose to the algorithm and fall off timelines. You don’t just need views, you need people to keep viewing. A “view” to Facebook only requires three seconds of play time!

In addition to crafting compelling content, you should upload your videos directly to Facebook. Why? Native Facebook video performs better than the same video on any other platform. In fact, they attract 186% more engagements (bye, Youtube!).

Video terms to know

Facebook is nice enough to provide you with an arsenal of data. From the “Page Insights,” you can truly learn what is working and what’s not. You might notice some new terminology if you’re new to video marketing. Here are some basic terms to know:

Unique Viewers is the number of individual people who watched the video. It doesn’t count repeat views! This is important to know how many potential prospects viewed your content versus who is viewing it multiple times.

Average Engagement Rate is simple enough. This metric shows how much engagement your videos are generating per impression. If your videos aren’t generating engagement, they’re losing any organic reach potential. Like NewsWhip said, “Sharing activity leads to more views, essentially acting as a broadcasting mechanism for native videos.” Promote videos that attract clicks and comments or say goodbye and try a new video idea.

Average Completion Rate is the most important video metric because it’s what Facebook’s algorithm focuses on most. The average completion rate shows the portion of video that’s watched in an average session. It’s great because you can see exactly when people are dropping off and how much of your content is getting consumed. For example if you know people stop watching around 12 seconds in, try inserting an attention grabber there in your next video!

You have all the potential in the world to succeed in Facebook video marketing. All you need to focus on is authentic content that drives real engagement. Wear your heart on your sleeve, be vulnerable or honest or funny, and create emotions! Bring people closer together and you’ll be bringing in new business.
